How It Works

How it works
With the help of volunteers and generous donors, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County builds and renovates homes in partnership with qualified partner families. Upon completion, homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with no-interest, affordable mortgages. The homeowners’ mortgage payments then go into the Fund for Humanity, which helps to build more Habitat homes for more partner families. Habitat is not a give-away program. Rather, it is an opportunity for homeownership in which partner families invest hundreds of hours to prepare for owning their own homes.

Cost of a home
Habitat homes are possible through donations from individuals, churches, corporations and other organizations. These donations, combined with in-kind services from local professional vendors, such as plumbers and electricians, and volunteer labor allow us to keep our costs low, and these savings are passed along to Habitat homeowners in the form of zero-interest affordable monthly mortgages payments.

We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, or sources of income.
