Rock the House

Local students of all ages are coming together to support a local family as they prepare for homeownership through Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County.

Rock the House is the project name for the collaboration between Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County, the South Bend Community School Corporation, the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation, and the Notre Dame Habitat for Humanity Chapter to raise funds and build a home for the Frison family this Spring. Rock the House is a unique community-wide effort involving students of all ages, teaching them leadership skills and basic construction methods.

Students from the Notre Dame Habitat for Humanity Chapter are teaming up with high school students and faculty advisors from Adams, Clay, Penn, Riley, and Washington High Schools, helping each school to form its own Habitat Chapter or Club. In addition to the mentorship role that the Notre Dame students have with the high-school clubs, they are also donating $10,000 to the Rock the House build project. In addition, the high school Habitat Clubs aim to spread awareness about Habitat for Humanity, and the issues of poverty housing in our community that it addresses, to the intermediate and elementary school students.

Rock the House began last fall, when Superintendent Dr. Robert Zimmerman of the South Bend Community School Corporation and Dr. Jerry Thacker of the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation got on board with the idea of having a Habitat home completely funded and built by their students.

Walls at the Mall

Students from area high schools build and raise walls for Rock the House at University Park Mall.

Construction on Rock the House began last Saturday, February 2, at the Walls at the Mall event. Students from the participating high schools gathered near the SR23 entrance of University Park Mall from 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. to build and raise the walls for the Frison family home.

Adams, Clay, Penn, Riley, and Washington High Schools will be working on the Frison family home until its completion late Spring.

If you are a high school student that would like more information about getting involved with Rock the House, please contact the Habitat for Humanity volunteer coordinator.
