Youth Programs
Rock the House is a collaborative effort of students from area high schools. The Rock the House build will begin in March. It will be on the 1600 block of Division in Mishawaka. Click here for a map.
Partner family Lisa Ullery will be the recipient of this home. Lisa and her son, Damon, can’t wait to build their home!
Lisa and Damon found it difficult to find affordable and decent housing in St. Joe County. She ended up moving back in with her parents to help with the cost of living. She then went back to school to get a degree in the health care field, hoping that one day she and Damon could have a home of their own.
After waiting expectantly for a letter from Habitat that would announce whether she was accepted into the program, one day she came home to a small envelope. When she saw it, she was immediately disappointed, assuming that those accepted would receive more than just a letter. As she opened the envelope to confirm her fears, she was surprised to find the greeting of “Congratulations!” staring at her from the page. She continued crying, but by then they were tears of joy.
Now, just more than a year later, Lisa has a college degree and a steady job as a medical assistant. She is working to complete her sweat equity hours as she helps other families build their homes. She loves being able to tell her son, “We’re going to move into our new house this year!”
Two wall build events will take place on Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26. Students from Adams, Clay, Marian, Penn, Plymouth, Riley and St. Joe will be participating. Sign up at school to come out and help. Check out the event calendar to see when your school is scheduled to work!
